Between the chapters 1-4 Elijah goes to Cooter's home because Cooter found long and wiggly tracks in his backyard. The preacher comes and tells the boys that the tracks are from hoop snakes and that the new-free folks accidentally brought them. The boys get frightened by what the preacher tells them about the hoop snake and they both run home.
Elijah runs home screaming to his mother and she thinks Elijah is getting scared for no reason. Elijah's mom thinks he should be more brave but when Elijah reminds her of her fear of Toady frogs and that ends the conversation. Elijah wanted to show Ma that she would be fragile if she saw a toady frog on the street, so he and his friend Cooter wrapped a toady frog in a sweater his ma knit and put it in her knitting basket. When Ma and Pa went and sat on their rockers she pulled out her sweeter and saw a toady frog inside it and she started running away and jumping. Elijah and Cooter laughed so hard they fell and ma and Pa saw them. Pa went to them and told them that what Elijah did he would get the consequence. About two days later Elijah saw his ma and pa on the stoop. Elijah's Ma told him to wash his hand then he could get a cookie, he went and when he came back he reached in and felt a snake and he was very frightened. His Ma and Pa were laughing so hard.
Elijah gets to be in a celebration because he was the first slave child born free along with 2 other very special people. He remembers when he was two years old and a special person was playing with him and he puked all over the special person. After that he went to flapjack the mule and the mules owner, Mr.Segee for chores. After he was done he asked the mule owner if he can take flapjack the mule to the lake to do some fishing and the owner, Mr. Segee said yes. Elijah remembered that 1 month ago the preacher saw Elijah throw rocks and was amazed and thought Elijah was blessed by the lord jesus or he was conjuring and was held by the devils. the preacher took Elijah to the forest to practice shooting. When Elijah got to the lake he fished by throughing rocks and he fished 10 fish in total. The preacher saw and thought this to was a gift by the lord. The preacher asked Elijah if he wanted to help him with the settlement and Elijah said yes.The preacher asked if Elijah wanted to go practice shooting with him and use a gun.
Chapters 5-8 : Discussion Director - Tenzin
Through the chapters 5-8 , the pages are about how Elijah goes back to home after taking Old Flapjack to fishing. Elijah gave one of his catches to Mrs. Brown for a cherry apple pie which his father loved, kept three for himself and one for Mr.Leroy who asked earlier. Earlier after he done fishing, the people that knew Elijah tried to sweet talk to him.
Once Elijah got home, he ate his dinner , took the food that was for Mr.Leroy and went to Mrs.Holton's house because that was where Mr.Leroy was. Mr.Leroy worked as a carpenter at Mrs.Holton's because his wife, daughter and son are at America, so he wants to buy them out. As he arrives at the place, he heads to the backyard where Mr. Leroy was chopping down trees. They later have a small chat and Elijah heads home.
The next day is about when Elijah's friend Cooter, doesn't show respect to their teacher Mr. Travis and gets punished. Addition to that, Mr.Travis is a really strict teacher . So when Cooter shows Elijah the word, Familiarity Breeding Contempt that was written and they both misunderstands it to Family Breeding Contest . They both get punished for what they did.
The next day when Elijah was cleaning Flapjack after school, the Preacher comes. He tells Elijah about this carnival in town that Elijah was told not to go to by his parent's and neighbours. The Preacher convinces Elijah by saying," I've thought of a way we can use your god-given gift" (pg.104 paragraph 4). But without thinking it through, he agrees. They later meet each other at night time and go to the carnival. When they arrive, they head into a show about a woman shooting with he slingshots in a tent. Chapters 9-12 Discussion Director - Lobsang
Through Chapters 9-12 Elijah goes with the preacher to see the conjurer and meets a little white kid who tells him that there is a person in Chatham who is also named Elijah. The boy tells him that he should find another name because Elijah from Chatham already took it, he also killed a full grown indian man with nothing but his left hand and he is only 12 years old!
After their discussion the conjurer appears and brings up the little white boy and asks him to look deep in his eyes and he does he gets hypnotized.
The conjurer asks him about his name and he replies that his name is Samuel then he got Samuel to act like a chicken and made him act like it was cold.
The conjurer tried to make him go swim in Lake Eerie and then told him to take his shirt, undershirt and his silk trousers off.
The preacher and Elijah met the carnival owner and the preacher tells the owner if he heard of the Chochotes tribe and introduces Elijah as Ahbo someone who is the sole survivor of the Chochotes tribe. The preacher brags about how good Ahbo is at fishing and hunting that Ahbo and Madame Sabbar have a race to see who can put out the candle the quickest. Elijah meets the real MaWee and he tells Elijah how the carnival owner paid 100 dollars for him. The preacher takes Elijah and leaves. It is a Monday morning and Elijah finds MaWee shaved of it's hair an put in to clothes, MaWee tells Elijah that he got stolen by his friend the preacher and he would prefer it if he wasn't free.
It is a early Saturday morning Elijah, Cooter and his Pa saw Flapjack snorting, whenever Flapjack snorts it means a stranger is here. Elijah and the group saw two people hiding in the tree. When Emma Collins first came she had that doll with her even when she came to school Elijah's mom thinks Emma is same as Elijah because they are both fragile. There were five people one woman, one boy, one girl and one man and a baby. Elijah and Cooter went to ring Liberty Bell, When new people come to the settlement they ring the bell 20 times per each person, Cooter rang the bell 100 times and got in trouble with Mr.Polite for ringing it too much times even though it was the correct amount.
Chapter 13 - 16 discussion directer Hani
It all started when Elijah went To get the mail at catham. He says Its his favurite chore if he gets to Ride on flapjack. The reason he has To do that is because sometimes The mail is late by a week or two So someone has to check whats Happening. So during this time Elijah and flapjack are not even 2 miles away from buxton after a while he meets Mr. Polite which tells him if your going to go to catham then you need a proper horse so Elijah goes back to buxton and trades him for a better horse. When Elijah gets to the mail store it said, "closed until the fifth any equirerys see george at the dry goods store. When Elijah got to the dry goods store Mr. MacMahon he gave the only packege from buxton it was a single letter the letter was adressed to Mrs holton. On sunday Elijah got his sunday clothes on so he and his mom could go give the bad news to mrs holton at the parlour. They found each other at the parlour at then they all went to mrs holtons house so the could all eat and talk. When it was time to give mrs holton the letter she asked if he could read it to her because shes not so good at reading. When Elijah finished reading he stoped and wanted for mrs holton to talk she said,"thank y'all for your care but I"m-a be all right. I knowed. I knowed already. Mrs holton sniffled and cryed she was sad because her husband John Holton died. It was Sunday and Elijah was in church

Between chapter 17 - 24 word spread that mr.Leroy got enough money to buy his family out of slavery. one day Elijah went fishing when cooter came and told him that mr.Highgate got hurt and hes comeing in a wagen to buxten without the preacher. Eiljah ran to the street to catch them and saw them. Elijah called Pa and mr.Highgate told his story about the preacher stealing mr.Leroys money and shooting mr.Highgate. Elijah and Pa went to tell mr.Leroy about the preacher and when they told him Elijah was scared that mr.Leroy would hurt him since he was the one who said he could trust the preacher. His parents said he couldn't go to the meeting to decide what they were gonna do to the preacher but he hid in the curch anyway.Just before he was going to hide someone came and snatched him away. He was kidnapped! When he looked closer it was mr.Leroy! He wanted to go to thye city and kill the preacher and he meant it when he said, "I'm-a find Zephariah and shoot him down for stealing my dreams of getting my family out. I'm-a look him in the eye and make sure he die of terrible death." He asked Elijah for his helpbut he said no so he forced him even though he didn't want to, he needed some help.Once they got there they asked a man if they saw the preacher and the man said the preacher is in the stables. Mr.Leroy looked worried adn asked Elijah to go in and steal the money back. Mr.Leroy gave the gun to Elijah and than fainted. He died and Elijah knew he had to keep his promis and save mr.Leroys dreams. Once Elijah got to the stables he saw some slaves and than he remembered what he promissed to mr.Leroy and was about to kill the preacher until the lady said that he was too late. the preacher was already killed.Some men he'd been gambling with took him in the stables and killed him. The slave family asked him where he was from and he told her he was from Canada West. She told him that her family was gonna get spilt up. Elijah told the slave family's baby he was going to free her since he has a gun everyone would be scared.They went to the person who helped mr.Highgate but he could not help him because he sad he could not go against the law. They set off there journy to Buxton.
